Over the years, the use of diagnostic sonography has expanded in all specialty areas including abdominal, obstetric/gynecologic, as well as vascular and cardiac imaging. In gynecology, technological advancements allow for a detailed look at the female reproductive system. The sonographer is expected to investigate and obtain representative images of the female pelvic anatomy for physician interpretation. The quality of the images that are captured is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, the equipment being used, the patient being examined, and the sonographer operating the system. It is imperative that the sonographer understand and manipulate the equipment appropriately in order to capture, obtain, or produce high quality diagnostic images. This is why sonography is often considered "operator dependent." This activity will examine the normal-appearing female anatomy of the reproductive system and identify instances where sonographic images would beneficial. It will also discuss specific techniques for technologists to use in order to obtain optimal images as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using these techniques.
