Imaging professionals are responsible for keeping their patients protected health information confidential, as mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This can be difficult as healthcare and technology continually are evolving. Understanding HIPAA guidelines and the ethical obligations involved as defined by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) helps imaging professionals manage their role in regard to maintaining HIPAA's standards when dealing with digital imaging, the challenges of social media, and all other types of protected health information. The following article provides a brief overview of HIPAA, recommendations from the American Society of Radiologic Technologists and the ARRT, as well as how healthcare has changed since the inception of HIPAA and the potential problems associated with HIPAA and the imaging profession.
