Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies reported in women and the second leading cause of their cancer-related deaths. Screening mammography, particularly with digital imaging, has greatly improved the early detection of malignant lesions, especially in younger women and in those with dense breast tissue. Maintaining high standards of quality control (QC) is essential to maximizing the image quality of mammograms. The most recent version of the American College of Radiology's (ACR) mammography accreditation program was released in 2016 as the Digital Mammography Quality Control Manual and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a substitute for the guidelines recommended by the manufacturers of mammography equipment. These voluntary guidelines, which standardize and streamline, the process of quality assurance, have the potential to improve the performance, documentation, and assessment of QC measures at mammography centers that adopt the ACR recommendations.
