Technological advancements in breast imaging have improved the ability to detect small, early stage breast cancers. Making an accurate diagnosis impacts treatment decisions and long-term prognosis. Minimally invasive diagnostic biopsy procedures have replaced many of the older surgical excisional biopsy methods. As the ability to screen and diagnose breast cancer has improved, surgical treatment of breast cancer has evolved from radical mastectomy to breast conservation therapy. In addition, minimally invasive ablation techniques have progressed with the goal of achieving outcomes like that of breast conservation therapy, but with decreased morbidity, shorter hospitalization stay, and improved cosmetic results. This article provides a brief review of the most common breast imaging modalities and biopsy procedures, and current and emerging interventional approaches for treatment and management of breast cancer.
