    Course Description
    Screening mammography is a proven means to reduce mortality from breast cancer. Full-field digital mammography (FFDM), a computer-based imaging system that has replaced conventional analog-film technology, is limited by relatively poor sensitivity in most subgroups of the screening population. A new imaging technique, contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM), combines low-energy 2-dimensional mammography with a high-energy image. The resulting images generate highly sensitive and specific pictures that visualize tumor neovascularity with accuracy comparable to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). CESM is a cost-effective and convenient tool for the diagnosis and management of patients with breast cancer and is now being used in indications customarily reserved for MRI. It also is being evaluated in potential new applications, including subgroups at high risk for disease.

    • EXPLAIN how contrast-enhanced spectral mammography overcomes the limitation of full-field digital mammography.
    • EVALUATE the science supporting the current indications for contrast-enhanced spectral mammography.
    • APPRAISE the advantages and disadvantages of contrast-enhanced spectral mammography relative to other imaging modalities.
    • ASSESS the studies suggesting the safety and efficacy of additional uses.
    • COMPARE the cost-effectiveness of contrast-enhanced spectral mammography and breast MRI.
